I did add

RewriteBase /news/

to the .htaccess file in the install folder but it didn't make any difference.

Just copy the files from the public folder, '/subfolder/laravelapp/public' to the root subfolder '/subfolder/'

Then use something like this https://github.com/TerrePorter/LaravelFrameworkLoader to modify the paths in the laravel app. Also need to edit the index.php file and fix the pathing for the includes.
